HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP —
William Joseph Fitzmartin, age 91, of Hempfield Township, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at his residence.
He was born June 5, 1921, in Greenville, Pa., the son of Joseph James and Mary (Foley) Fitzmartin. He was a 1939 graduate of St. Michael High School and graduated with an Accounting Degree from Youngstown State University.
He was a combat Veteran of WWII, having flown 35 missions as a member of a B-17 Bomber Crew with the Eight Air Force. He was awarded 7 Air Medals, 2 Battle Stars, a WWII Victory Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation Medal
He worked as the Accounting Department Supervisor of the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co. and the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1981. William was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Greenville.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus Fitzmartin Council #1446, V.F.W. Post #3374 and was a life member of B.P.O.E. #145, all of Greenville. He was a former member of Greenville Borough Council and the National Association of Accountants. Prior to WWII, Bill played trumpet with the Transfer Band and the Fredonia Fireman’s Band.
After returning from the war, he played with the Greenville VFW Band and he was the co-founder of Johnny Martin Orchestra, a popular big band in this area.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Dolores (Muster), whom he married July 4, 1944; three daughters, Paula Lyon and her husband, Rev. Daniel T. Lyon of Independence, Mo., Barbara Anthony and her husband, David of Conneaut and Mary “Molly” Carman and her husband, Peter of Ellicott City, Md.; three sons, Daniel Fitzmartin of Newton Centre, Mass., Kevin Fitzmartin and his wife, Denise of Spring, Texas and William R. Fitzmartin and his wife, Debbie of Conneaut, Ohio; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Fitzmartin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 25th, at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Greenville.
Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, June 24th, at LOUTZENHISER-JORDAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville. Burial with Committal and Military Honors rendered by VFW Post #3374 will be held in St. Michael Cemetery.
Donations may be made to St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 85 N. High St., Greenville, Pa. 16125.
