CONNEAUT —
Betty A. Mooney, age 84, of Conneaut, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012.
She was born July 10, 1928, in Conneaut, the daughter of Roy E. and Rose (Somppi) Thayer. Betty graduated from Rowe High School in 1946 and continued her education at Bowling Green University. As a teenager, she worked at the Conneaut Creamerie and Lake Shore Lumber.
After college, she returned home to start her career at the Conneaut Banking and Trust Co., and the Northeastern Ohio National Bank. The Bank merged with Ameritrust and she became the operations officer and spent years teaching teller training throughout the banks in the county. She retired after 33 1/2 years from the bank in 1984.
She was an avid sports enthusiast, playing golf at the Conneaut Country Club, Conneaut Shores Golf Course, and Windy Hills Golf Course in numerous leagues. For many years, she was the women’s club champion and went on to compete at the regional tournaments. Betty was one of the top women bowlers in Ashtabula County, bowling during the evening and later in the afternoon leagues. She liked to compete in local tournaments and received many awards.
She enjoyed watching the Cleveland professional sports teams, especially the Cleveland Indians. On the fantasy baseball league, she was a two year champion. In her later, years she enjoyed playing at the nearby casinos. Presque Isle “Jester machine” was her favorite. Betty loved having the family holiday parties, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Mooney, celebrating 64 years of marriage; two daughters, Linda (Sidney Gregory) Eckenrod of Farmdale and Cheryl (Carl) Heinonen of Conneaut; four granddaughters, Lisa (Scott) Randolph, Hollie (David) Swartzfager, Alison (Zachary) Hathy and Lora Eckenrod; seven great-grandchildren, LilliAnn and Khloe Swartzfager, Brielle and Aiden Hathy, and Larissa, Jared and Logan Randolph; and numerous nieces, nephews, and more distant relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Edward A. Thayer in 1996.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Tim Kraus, of Conneaut Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Service.
