CONNEAUT —
Edgar S. Carroll, age 89, of Conneaut, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, 2012, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.
He was born August 29, 1923, in Petoskey, Mich., the son of Elver and Ella (Way) Carroll. After graduation from high school, Edgar enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII.
He was chief cook with Pittsburgh Steamship Lines, sailing the Great Lakes on several boats until retiring from the P.R. Clarke. During the winters when shipping stopped, he worked part-time as a bus driver for Conneaut School District.
Edgar was a member of St. Mary/St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, the American Legion Cowle Post 151, the Evergreen Lodge, the Shawnee Square Dancers Club, was a life member of the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Association, and was a VIP Blood Donor.
He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and board games, yard work, gardening, cooking, traveling and watching the Cleveland Indians, especially when they were winning.
Survivors include his daughter, Patricia (Mark) Dubinsky of Conneaut; his nephew, Andrew P. Grant of Conneaut; sisters, Shirley Thurlow and Phyllis (Bruce) Cotanche, both of Michigan; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Carroll in 2011; his sister, Dorothy Goodwin; his brother, Roland Carroll; and his brother-in-law, Ralph Thurlow.
The family would like to express their gratefulness to the ER Staff at UH-Conneaut Medical Center and the staff at UPMC Hamot Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24th, at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, Ohio, with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Cowle Post 151.
No calling hours will be observed.
Contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the charity of choice. Envelopes will be available at the church and at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., which has charge of arrangements.
