SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Florence E. Hamilton, age 100, of W. Prospect Road, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at her home.


She was born August 24, 1909, in Jefferson, the daughter of James F.K. and Betty (Paulson) Hamilton and had been a lifelong area resident.


Florence graduated from Kent State University in 1927, where she received her teaching degree. She went on to teach at Griggs Corners and South Denmark schools. She worked for the family of Charles Kneen for 20 years and then became a caregiver for the Fredrick family until 1963. In 1965, she became a nanny for the Olson family, where she helped raise Albert Olson's three children.


A member of First United Methodist Church for over 70 years, she enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games and spending time with her family.


Her survivors include one sister, Caroline M. Hazen of Deland, Fla.; her niece, Kathy (John) Simon of Jefferson; two nephews, Ken (Lucelia) Hamilton of Walla Walla, Wash. and Keith (Gayle) Hamilton of Harlingen, Texas; great-nieces and nephews, Laura, Curtis and Angelina; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hamilton of Jefferson; and her "adopted family" whom she cared for, Albert "Jupe" Olson and his children (Kenneth (Linda) Olson, Linda (Eric) Stranman and Tammy (Rev. Frank) Loeffel), grandchildren and great-grandchilren.


She was preceded in death by her sisters, Nora Hamilton, Edith Hamilton, Helen A. Hamilton, C. Lucile Hamilton, Bessie M. Weeks and Gladys Hamilton; two brothers, Clarence and Arthur Hamilton; and her parents.


A Service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, March 22nd, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Barbara Roseberry, Pastor of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Frank Loeffel, Associate Pastor of Pentecostal Church of God, officiating. Florence will be laid to rest following the Service in Oakdale Cemetery, Jefferson.


Calling Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 21st, at the Funeral Home.
