ASHTABULA —
Merle R. Gran, age 87, of Schenley Ave., Ashtabula, died Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Country Club Retirement Campus.
He was born August 22, 1924, in Ashtabula, the son of Charles E. and Marvie (Welton) Gran. He was a 1943 graduate of Ashtabula High School. Merle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Pennsylvania in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
He worked as a carpenter for his father and then later as a member of Carpenter Local #404.
He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church; the former Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church; American Legion Post #103; VFW Post #943 and the East Ashtabula Club. He liked golfing, bowling and spending time with his family, working on whatever projects they had going.
Surviving him are his children, Barbara (Don) Depault of New Bedford, Mass., Paul (Darlene) Gran of Ashtabula and Carl (Debbie) Gran of Greer, S.C.; his beloved granddaughter, Ashley Gran; and his step-children, Martha (Jack) Haluszka of Madison, Robert (Sarah) Williams of Wilmington, N.C., and Barbara (Robert) Laughlin, Susan (Charles) Morse and Laura Gran, all of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth (Soini) Gran; his second wife, Arminta Castle Williams Gran; and his sisters, Shirley Stowell, Sandy Gran and Dorothy Ketchum.
Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 8th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery with American Legion Post #103 conducting Military Rites.
Calling Hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 7th, at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Lakeside High School Athletic Booster. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
