James J. Conroy

CONNEAUT — James J. Conroy, age 76, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Friday morning, May 11, 2012, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was born Nov. 11, 1935, in Coraopolis, Pa., and was the son of Joseph A. Conroy and Ida R. (Gazdagh) Conroy Lindner. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1962 from California State College and his Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967. He also served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne from 1954 to 1956.

Mr. Conroy was a speech therapist in the Conneaut and Ashtabula School Systems for 20 years, retiring in 1998. He had also served as principal at Happy Hearts School, and was involved in fund raising for Happy Hearts and Ashcraft Industries.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Conneaut; was a past president of C.L.Y.O.; past governor of Conneaut Moose Lodge #472; past Noble Grand of the Conneaut I.O.O.F. #773; and a former member of the Ashtabula Lions Club.

Mr. Conroy enjoyed golfing, bowling and coaching youth baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine (Gates) Ewig Conroy of Conneaut, whom he married June 18, 2005; his daughter, Kelly L. (Chris) Cimino of Ashtabula Township, Ohio; two sons, David S. Conroy of Raleigh, N.C. and Joseph of Dayton, Ohio; two step-children, Bethany Ewig and Brian M. Ewig, both of Conneaut; four grandchildren, triplets Christopher, Katherine and Paige, and James; a great-granddaughter, Jillian “Lily” Conroy; his mother, Ida R. Lindner of Wilson, N.C.; and two sisters, Margaret Stair of Wilson, N.C. and Patricia Wyzenbeek of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father; his brother, John Conroy; and his first wife, Susan B. Conroy on April 17, 2004.

Calling Hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m., TODAY, May 14th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with a Service following at 6 p.m. The Rev. Jonathan Singer, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve or to the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
