ASHTABULA —
Mary M. (Czop) Pandora, age 89, formerly of E. 30th St., died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic after a brief illness.
She was born July 13, 1922, in Shawnee, Ohio, the daughter of Peter and Esther (Dorfel) Czop and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1945. She grew up in Fairport Harbor, Ohio and graduated from Harding High School where she was an exceptional student and a talented coloratura soprano in the choir.
During WWII, she worked for the A&P food chain and, behind the scenes, brokered food for persons who had run out of food ration stamps. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Kroger’s as a Head Cashier in its then Saybrook Plaza Super Store for nearly 27 years.
Her survivors include three children, Frank (Catherine) Pandora of Columbus, Vicky (Gary) Ball of Kingsville and Jeff (Cherie) Pandora of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Katrina (Ed) Niemi, Ryan (Corinne) Ball and Greg, Brandon (Nicole) and Michael Pandora; two great-grandsons, Riley Matthew and Jonathan; one younger sister, Dorothy Pizzino of Painesville; and two dear nieces, Wendy McPherson and Tracy Amigo.
A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish for over 50 years (now Our Lady of Peace) and the Knights of Columbus’ Isabella Guild while her husband, Frank, was Grand Knight.
She was a wonderful host, passionate about entertaining and cooking for people. She was very talented, making many dishes from a variety of cultures long before it was popular. She enjoyed making surprise treats for her children and grandchildren.
She was an inveterate traveler, always eager to take a trip on short notice to anywhere interesting. She enjoyed vacationing in south Florida, South Carolina, Aruba, Toronto, New York and in the Poconos. At 75, she sailed the inside passage to Alaska and explored the local port city of Ketchikan. She enjoyed music, dancing, puzzles, reading and working in her rose garden. She was particularly fond of white flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Pandora in 1988; her older sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Stazzone; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Stazzone and Eugene Pizzino; one nephew, Eugene Pizzino II, who died serving his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam War; and her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8th, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Worship Site, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Ernesto Rodriguez will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7th and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Parish.
