CHAMPION — Donald Lee Elliott, age 77, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Windsor House of Champion, Ohio.
Don was born June 13, 1935, in Andover, the son of Claude and Hazel (Williams) Elliott.
Don possessed the “gift of gab”. He enjoyed conversation and always had a history story about something. Yet, he was a good listener. Over Don’s lifetime, he worked with his father and brother in tending to their dairy farms, driving and delivering home fuel. He worked with his other brother for many years at Bargain Mart in Ashtabula. This was the first discount variety store in the Northeast part of the United States. He retired from Ashtabula Bow Socket to pursue a career as an auctioneer, which had always been his dream profession. He became a well-known auctioneer of the area for 40 years. His reputation of his favorite phrase “slicker than socks on a rooster,” was sure to be heard during one of his sales. Don was also known for his great wealth of knowledge about antiques. He was always researching different items and their origination. Many people would call, write or stop to see Don hoping to hear about their latest treasures. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He also took pleasure in restoring anything old, especially furniture. His ability of knowing and repairing various wood pieces was certainly a talent of his.
Don loved to sing. His auctioneer cry was distinguished by it sounding more like a song than just a cry. You never had to coax him to carry a tune especially songs by Hank Williams. He was always ready and willing to oblige. His daughter will especially miss this, as it was something they always shared when they were together!
Don is survived by his children, Theresa (Rick) Hutton and Shannon (Joanne) Elliott, both of Cortland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Daynelle (Christopher) Sanner, Jarrett Hutton, Shannon (Rachel) Elliott and Tyler Elliott; and two great-grandchildren, Colton and Luke Elliott. Don also leaves behind two very loyal friends, Royal “Woody” Woodworth and Bill Wiser.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elton and Bob; a sister, Wilda; and a son, Matthew Lynn Elliott.
Honoring Don’s wishes, the family will be having a private graveside service at Oakdale Cemetery.
