Louis S. Kelner

GENEVA — Louis Stanley Kelner, age 85, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the home of his son, Mark.

The youngest of four children and the son of Charles and Tillie (Woodarski) Kelner, he was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Briarhill, Pa. After serving in the United States Army for several years and being honorably discharged; he moved to the Ashtabula County area, first settling in Dorset, Jefferson and finally Ashtabula.

Louis was a twenty year veteran of the Ashtabula City Police Department. He truly loved his job and the men he worked with. Louis’ routine at the beginning of each shift was to place a specific number of cigars above the visor of his car. Never one to stand around, Louis also worked for Pinney Dock for a number of years.

He had several hobbies; collecting coins, playing pinochle with his friends and family, attending the monthly police retirement dinners at the Elks Lodge or just enjoying lazy afternoons fishing. His greatest enjoyment came from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was never too old or too tired to get down on the floor to play with them.

Louis will be remembered for his ever present cigars; his strength during adversity, his genuine concern for his fellowman; and the love of his family and friends.

Louis is survived by his children, Christine Mariner of California and Mark (Elizabeth) Kelner of Geneva; four grandchildren, K.C. Locy, Kelley Marcel, Andrew Kelner and Erin Kelner; and eight wonderful great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ed, Joe, Stanley and Victoria; his parents; and his loving companion, Mary Niemi.

A Memorial Service will be held 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 12th, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Chris Bell, pastor of The First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling Hours will be observed from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Funeral Home.

If desired, contributions in Louis’ name may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
