ASHTABULA —
James W. Shannon, age 82, of Chestnut Drive, Ashtabula, Ohio, died Monday morning, Feb. 6, 2012, at the Country Club Retirement Center where he had resided the past five days.
Born Dec. 5, 1929, in Ashtabula, he was the son of Capt. James G. and Elizabeth (Rady) Shannon and has been a lifelong Ashtabula resident. He was a graduate of Harbor High School, Kent State University and attended Ohio State University. A Veteran, he served in the U. S. Navy, during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Shannon was the National Sales Manager for RP&C Valve in Fairview, Pa., retiring in 1988. Following his retirement, he served five years as the Saybrook Township Zoning Inspector.
He was a lifelong member of Mother of Sorrows Church, where he served on the Parish Council; Elks Lodge #208; VFW Post #943; and the American Legion Post #103.
His enjoyments include boating on Lake Erie, traveling to Ireland, watching football, and being with his family and “Murphy”.
Survivors include his wife, Mary M. (Goss) Shannon, whom he married June 25, 1960, at Mother of Sorrows Church; three children, James M. (Liz) Shannon of Grandview Heights, Mary Kay (John) Meagher of Hilliard and Lynne A. (Jim) Montgomery of Ashtabula; and three grandsons, James M. Shannon, James (Jay) R. Montgomery and Sean R. Montgomery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eleanor Shannon Goss; and a brother, Francis “Pat” Shannon.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 9th, at Our Lady of Peace, Mother of Sorrows Parish, 1464 W. 6th St., Ashtabula. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with American Legion Post #103 providing Full Military Honors.
Calling Hours will be Wednesday, Feb. 8th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ashtabula Home of the FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, INC., 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
