MONROE TOWNSHIP —
David E. Shean Sr., age 95, of Monroe Township, Ohio, passed away Wednesday morning, June 27, 2012, at Ashtabula County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville, Ohio.
Dave was born in Peanut Coal Mine Town, Latrobe, Pa., on August 13, 1916, to Caroline “Lena” (Striegel) and Andrew Shean. In 1922, Dave and his parents moved to Ohio. He was a graduate of Conneaut High School, Class of 1934.
After graduation he returned to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he leased and ran an Atlantic Gas Station for several years. The Atlantic Station was located across the street from the restaurant where he met his wife, Betty. Dave and Betty were married in 1949.
In 1952, he and his family returned to Ohio where he was employed with Union Carbide, Linde Air Division, in Ashtabula from 1952 until his retirement in 1980. He also farmed from 1952 until 1997. He had many nephews join him over the years for summers on the farm in Ohio.
He traveled extensively with his family and other relatives, camping, and enjoying simple times. He and his wife traveled to all 50 states, Mexico and Canada. They cruised to Alaska, and through Europe visiting 10 countries. In 2002, they toured China. He was so proud to have walked on the Great Wall and at the age of 84.
Dave was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church and served on their board for many years. He was a member of Monroe Grange, was a 60-year member of Lodge 45, Free and Accepted Masons of Pa., a 50-year member of Duquesne Commandery #72, Knights Templar, and a 50-year member of Shriners International, Syria Shriners.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Betty (Myers) Shean; their children, Carol (John) Eaton, David Shean Jr. and Brenda Sanford (Ed Remmel), all of Monroe Township, Ohio; grandchildren, J.J. (Dawn) Eaton, Julie Tenney, Jackie (Adam) Lytle and Michele (Eric) Thompson, all of Conneaut, Krista Shean of Las Vegas, Nev., Deanna (Kris) Atkinson of New Cumberland, Pa., Patricia Shean of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Elizabeth Sanford (Bryan Scalise) of North Kingsville and Patrick Sanford Jr. of Monroe Township. Dave is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Lois (Lou) Murtha of Monroe Township; his brother-in-law, George (Roma) Myers of West View, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Shean and Caroline Stowers; his step-father, James Stowers; his sister, Blanche Shaffer; and his great-grandchildren at infancy, Thomas DeMarco and Stella Scalise.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 3rd, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Pastor Lois Burke, retired from Monroe United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery, Monroe Township.
Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday, July 2nd, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and also on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the Service. Contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
