SOUTHAVEN, Miss. —
Esther Laverne Smith, age 92, formerly of Austin Drive, Ashtabula, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Baptist Desoto Hospital, Southaven, Miss.
She was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Saybrook, the daughter of Walter and Hattie (Crecraft) Calaway and had been an area resident for most of her life and was a 1938 graduate of Ashtabula High School.
She worked during her younger years at the Ashtabula Bow Socket and Woolworths. Mrs. Smith was a 70-year member of the Saybrook Grange, a 42-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Covered Bridge Chapter #591, former member of the First Christian Church, was active with the senior center, and was a member of the election board for 15 years. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her son, Marshall (Sally) Smith of Greenwood, Ind.; daughters, Sharen (Charles) Schulz of Memphis, Tenn., Julie (Metin) Ataman of Boca Raton, Fla. and Jennifer (Ken) Hays of Hernando, Miss.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Joann Keller of Kingsville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith in 1985; son, Martin Smith; and eight sisters, Isabelle Brail, Pauline Thompson, Beverly Montgomery, Betty Spencer, Edith Drake, Lillian Proper, Lucille McConnell and Doris Weir.
A Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 4th, at Edgewood Cemetery, 4011 State Road, Ashtabula. The Rev. Richard Elwell, Interim Pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Andover, will officiate, with the Order of Eastern Star performing their Memorial Service. Burial will follow.
Friends may visit with the family from 12 Noon to 1 p.m., Saturday, following the Service, in the Reception Room of ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula who is in charge of arrangements.
