WILLIAMSFIELD —
Gilbert Jay Thompson, age 91, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.
He was born April 24, 1921, in Richmond, Ohio, the son of Ruby Luella (Kunz) and Maxwell Chester Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a 1939 graduate of Andover High School and Ohio State University in Veterinary Medicine. He served in the United States Army during World War II, then married June E. Ring of Conneaut on Dec. 26, 1950.
Dr. Thompson was in private veterinary practice for 16 years in Conneaut, until they moved to Boardman, Ohio with their 5 children. There he worked as a USDA supervisor in meat inspection. Later, he traveled and worked for the USDA in Europe, especially Poland, and then back to the U.S. in Broken Bow, Okla., where he lived over thirty years. After retiring from the government, he became a realtor for Kiamichi.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and a life member of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians and a member of the American Legion. Gil loved to write which led him to write countless "Letters to the Editor"; and he had his own column “Probing Gods World” in the Broken Bow Banner. As well as writing, he enjoyed animals, nature, traveling, taking scenic walks, camping and collecting coins. In recent years, he returned to the area where he was raised in Ohio near the Pennsylvania line and lived independently and happily, enjoying life, loving the Lord and his family and friends, praying for those who would come after him and leaving a legacy for us. He touched and impacted many lives for the glory of God.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Maxine E. Muller. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah K. (Charles) Teleha of Boardman, Ohio and Amy R. (Thomas) Calladine of Mecca, Ohio; three sons, Maxwell M. (Debra) Thompson of Cleveland, Tenn., Mark G. (Rosemarie) Thompson of Sheffield Township, Ohio and Jay E. (Martha) Thompson of Hubbard, Ohio; two sisters, Frances C. Arnold of Lake City, Pa. and Ruth M. Garvey of Tavares, Fla.; 24 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren with three more on the way.
