ORWELL — Walter Cline Stackhouse, age 74, of Orwell, Ohio, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at UHHS Geauga Hospital. Formerly of Cambridge, he had been a resident of the area since 1960.
Born at Claysville near Cambridge in Guernsey County, on Dec. 8, 1938, he was the son of Chauncey and Hazel Cline Stackhouse. Walter had served in the U.S. Army and the Ohio National Guard. He married Rose McAfee on Dec. 7, 1957.
He had been involved in the communication business since 1957 and had seen the changes from the old crank phones to the computer age. Employed by Orwell Telephone Company for 42 years, he had retired in 2002. In addition to his regular work, he had enjoyed being a grain farmer for a long time. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting.
Walter had served in many organizations relating to his work including the Ohio Telephone Association. He had been Township Clerk for Orwell Township for seven years, followed by 24 years as Township Trustee. He was a member of the Ashtabula County Trustees and Clerks Association and had served as president. For a number of years he had served on the Ashtabula County Planning Commission. He had been a member of the Grand Valley Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Grand Valley Planning Commission. He had also served on the Grand Valley Board of Education.
A member of the Orwell North Presbyterian Church since 1961, he had served on the Session. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Triandia #780, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland, and Eastern Star Covered Bridge Chapter #591
Survivors include his wife, Rose; son, Mark (Denise) Stackhouse of Orwell; grandchildren, Craig Stackhouse, Leanne Stackhouse, Brian Stackhouse and Bradley Stackhouse, all of Orwell; sisters, Electa Yurco of Cambridge and Iris Stanton of Willowick; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Lance Alan Stackhouse and Darren Wade Stackhouse; sisters, Mildred Crowley and Edna Thomas; and a brother, Richard Stackhouse.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8th, at Orwell North Presbyterian Church, 135 N. Maple St., Orwell. A Funeral Service officiated by the Rev. Sandy Seaton-Todd, including a Masonic service, will follow at the church starting at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the Orwell Township North Cemetery with Military Honors.
