KINGSVILLE — Reva M. Adkins, age 95, of Kingsville, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.
Born Nov. 3, 1917, in Kendalia, W.Va., the eldest daughter of the late John Andrew and Elsie (Jackson) Slater. Reva married her beloved husband, Thurmond F. (Catfish) Adkins Sr. on June 17, 1934. After starting a life together in West Virginia, they moved to Ashtabula in 1946.
She spent many years working in the grape vineyards for Bob Ganley and Bud Waldorf. Reva was a faithful member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church where she had been a member since 1948. She was a very talented and self-sufficient woman, who always fixed her own things, whether it was the car or her home, often doing her own upholstery and carpentry work.
Reva will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking, especially her cornbread and Sunday afternoon roast beef dinners. In her spare time, she enjoyed flower gardening, fishing, and collecting salt and pepper shakers.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Marie Shears of Kingsville; sons, Thurmond F. (Marilyn) Adkins Jr. of Geneva and Robert L. (Diana) Adkins Sr. of North Kingsville; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Reva was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Thurmond F. Adkins Sr. on Feb. 19, 1978; brothers, Burl, Thomas and Ernest Slater; sisters, Verna Whitten, Sylvia Bautista, Thelma Buckley and Sophie Slater; two grandchildren, Joyce Rice and Bart Adkins; and a son-in-law, Don Shears.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1st, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Harry Shipley officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., TODAY, Nov. 30th, at the Funeral Home.
