ROCK CREEK — John Franklin Hayes, age 78, of S. Main St., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at his home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Stratton, Ohio, the son of Ruby Baker “R.B.” and Grace (Rymer) Hayes and had been an Ashtabula County resident for 72 years. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean War.
A graduate of Rock Creek High School, he worked 25 years as a motor vehicle inspector for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and also had operated G and L Lawnmower Service from his home during the 1970’s.
John was a hardworking man of his word. He was passionate about caring for his family, doing quality woodworking, and bluegrass music. An excellent luthier, he had built many stringed instruments over the years.
His survivors include his wife and love of his life, Suzanne (Zakowski) Hayes, whom he married July 28, 1970; three loving children, Brian J. Hayes of Erie, Pa., Laura S. Hayes of Roaming Shores and Carolyn B. Hayes of Rock Creek; three beloved grandchildren, Stella Rose, Gabriel Lucas and Joy Elise; four sisters, Betty Nevison and Joan Smith, both of Rock Creek, Elsie Bertleff of Chardon and Linda Hayes of Dorset; three brothers, Larry Hayes of Tennessee, James Hayes of Ashtabula and Duane Hayes of Rock Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Anita Gordon, Phyllis Cocitto and Nancy Nelson; and his parents.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15th, at the Morgan Hose Volunteer Fire Department, 3033 E. Water St., Rock Creek.
