ASHTABULA — Palma Delores Rose, age 84, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at home surrounded by her loving family.

The daughter of Carl and Amelia (Ray) Izzi, she was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Ashtabula and had remained a lifelong area resident. Palma was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and was proud to have been a majorette in the band.

After high school, she worked for Lakeshore Gas Company for a number of years; later she worked in the Ashtabula City Auditor’s office as the Deputy Auditor and retired after thirty years of dedicated service.

On August 20, 1949, she married Eugene “Hodgie” Rose and together they celebrated fifty-five years of marriage prior to his death in 2004. Palma was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She was active in the Altar-Rosary Society and could be counted on to help whenever needed.

A wonderful cook, her meatballs and tomato sauce were outstanding. Palma would never let you leave her home without taking home “a little something” to eat. An avid sports fan, she and Hodgie would travel to New York to watch the Yankees. They were her team. They would schedule vacations in Florida for baseball spring training. She loved to go dancing with Hodgie and their many friends.

Above all Palma was most happy when in the company of her beloved grandchildren. She would go to all of the sporting events, whether it was high school or college. It was never too far for her to travel. She was their loudest cheerleader. Always encouraging them and proud of all their accomplishments. Palma will be remembered for her strong work ethic, grace through difficult times, her great love for her family and friends and her strong values. Those whose lives were touched by her presence are richer for having Palma in their lives.

She is survived by her children, Carla (Mark) Johnston of Ashtabula and Robert “Bob” Rose of Hudson; beloved grandchildren, Robert, Ryan and Bryan Rose and Krista and Kayla Johnston; her treasured great-granddaughter, Madison Rose; and her special niece, Marlene Smith and her children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Hodgie” Rose; her sister, JoAnn Johnson; her brother, Joe Izzi; daughter-in-law, Laura (Chapin) Rose in 2010; and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Monday, August 20th, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Mount Carmel Worship Site, E. 21st St. Ashtabula, Ohio, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula.

Calling Hours will be observed from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 19th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.

If desired, contributions in Palma’s name may be made to Crossroads Hospice, 3743 Boettler Oaks Drive, Suite “E”, Green, Ohio 44685, or to Our Lady of Peace Parish, Mount Carmel Worship Site.
