RAPID CITY, S.D. —
Steven T. Coy, age 59, of Rapid City, S.D., died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, as a result of an automobile accident in Arizona.
He was born March 12, 1952, in Geneva, Ohio, to Samuel and Faye (Cutshall) Coy. Steve’s childhood was spent in Geneva and he graduated from Geneva High School in 1970.
Steve’s first love was diesel mechanics and he went to school in Denver to follow that dream. A Veteran, he joined the United States Air Force in 1972. He enjoyed telling the story about how he received the Airman’s Medal for escaping unharmed when a B-52 he was performing maintenance on caught fire and exploded.
He met Laurie Haveman in Marquette, Mich., and they were married on June 13, 1986.
In 1993, Steve retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant from Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He then fulfilled his premarital requirement to Laurie that they move to Rapid City to live.
They attended Black Hills State University together from 1993 to 1997. Steve was a compliance officer for construction at Ellsworth Air Force Base before gaining his real estate license in 2002. In 2006, he and Laurie opened Coy's Home and Land Realty in Rapid City.
Steve enjoyed his work and traveling with Laurie.
Survivors include his wife, Laurie of Rapid City; his father, Samuel Coy of Brookfield, Ohio; and two brothers, Mike and his wife, Barbara, of Sundance, Wyo., and Collin and his wife, Dawn, of Brookfield, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his mother, Faye.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at EDSTROM & ROOKS FUNERAL SERVICE, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility of Rapid City with Full Military Honors provided by the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Steve’s ashes will be inurned at Black Hills National Cemetery at a future date.
