ASHTABULA —
Dorothy A. Crowell, age 90, of Hiram Ave., Ashtabula, died Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Country Club Retirement Campus.
She was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of Frederick and Helen (Devine) Ruhl and moved to Ashtabula during her high school years.
She was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and attended Business College in Ashtabula before starting her career with Carlisle’s Department Store. She started out as a secretary but in seven years moved up to advertising manager and started the store’s first personnel department. She retired from Carlisle’s in 1986 where she held the position of Corporate Sales and Promotion Director.
Following retirement, she stayed active in Civic organizations, especially the Ashtabula Art Center. She was a self taught painter and had shown some of her works at Ashtabula Art Center and Conneaut Art Guild. She had also played in three bridge clubs. She also enjoyed traveling and had visited Spain, Italy, Russia and England. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Surviving her are four children, William (Michele) Crowell of Cleveland, Martin (Mary) Crowell of Indianapolis, Diane (Greg) Catrambone of Huntingtown, Md. and Steve (Sara Hake) Crowell of South Bend, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William in 1980; and two sisters, Virginia Stapleton and Jane Crowell.
A Funeral Service will be held 12 Noon, Monday, August 27th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio with the Rev. Meredith Coleman, of Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place later at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ashtabula.
Calling Hour will be held from 11 a.m. until time of Service, Monday, at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
