WARREN — Hal Vernon Furman, age 59, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, Ohio.
The son of Vernon C. and Catherine (Hamm) Furman, he was born on Sept. 18, 1953, in Ashtabula and was a graduate of Ashtabula High School.
He was employed at Quick Plastic for more that fifteen years and was the lead supervisor prior to his early retirement.
Hal was a sportsman; he believed in the Browns and the Indians, always believing that next year would be the year and had his own bocce court in his backyard. He was passionate about the game of golf. He loved to go to the local courses with his friends. It was never too wet, too cold, or too hot to play a few rounds.
Twenty-two years ago, Hal was involved in an accident that caused him to become a quadriplegic. He was driving while impaired. He accepted his injury and was inspired to tell all of those he met that driving while impaired could have terrible consequences. Through all of his many surgeries and illnesses, Hal remained positive, loving and upbeat. The stories he told were to make others laugh and appreciate all that they had received in their lives.
Hal will be remembered for his sense of humor, his strength and courage in the face of adversity, and his unconditional love for friends and family.
He is survived by his son, Todd Furman of Plymouth Township; his grandson, Logyne Furman; his mother, Catherine Furman of Ashtabula; sister, Carolee (Louie) Caruso of Ashtabula; and his brother, Yankee (LuAnn) Furman of Ashtabula; his sister-in-law, Tina Furman of Jefferson; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon in 1997; and his brothers, Terry in 1999, Vernon and Jack in infancy.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19th, at the ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman, pastor of Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
Calling Hours will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18th, at the ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
