Shirley Boyd

ASHTABULA — Shirley Norton Boyd went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

Born in Jefferson, Ohio, on Sept. 13, 1922, she was the daughter of Julia (Hendrickson) Crooms and Dwight Gaines Crooms. Shirley lived in the Ashtabula area most of her life except for the seven years she lived in Cleveland. Mrs. Boyd attended Kent State University, Ashtabula Branch and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.

She enjoyed family and friends, traveling, reading, sewing and gardening.

After teaching in the Ashtabula Area City School System for 23 years, she retired in 1985. Shirley was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers’ Association. In 1968, she was initiated into the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a national teachers’ honorary society.

She was a 23 year member of the historic Gordon A.M.E. Church and was currently a member of Park Street Christian Church in Geneva, Ohio.

Shirley is survived by a son, Edward K. Farrar II of Ashtabula; daughters, Patricia R. Norton (Buford) of Berkeley, Calif. and Gayle D. (David) Collins of Pickerington, Ohio; grandchildren, Pamela Burks, Edward III, Michelle and Devin Farrar, Brandon and Aaron Norton-Buford, Andre Terrell and Ashley and Austin Collins; a beloved sister, Arlene (Nathaniel) Jones of Jefferson; a dear niece, Barbara L. Whipple of Cleveland; and a host of family, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Morris; husbands, Edward K. Farrar in 1946, Henry D. Norton in 1977 and Dennis E. Boyd in 2006; as well as a nephew, Marvin Whipple.

Services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4th, at Park Street Christian Church, 97 Park St., Geneva, with the Rev. John Munday, Pastor officiating. The Rev. Dr. German Womack Jr., Pastor of People’s Missionary Baptist Church in Ashtabula, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson immediately after the Service.

Friends may visit at the Church one hour prior to the Service.

DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.
