Stanley L. Gaumer

ASHTABULA — Stanley Lewis Gaumer was born in Saybrook, Ohio, the son of Stanley S. and Mae (Kitson) Gaumer. He graduated from Ashtabula High School with the class of 1946.

In 1948, he started work for Rockwell International Brake Division. Upon taking a leave of absence from Rockwell International, he volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1950 for the Korean conflict. He was returned to Walter Reed Army Hospital. After being released from the hospital, he served at Fort Bragg with the 64th Engineers. For the duration of his life, he met every two years with the 64th Engineers for reunions.

He married Inez A. Fassett at The First Presbyterian Church on Nov. 30, 1952. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last November.

Stanley worked for Rockwell International as a journeyman machine repairman. At the age of 50, after 31 years of service he retired.

Stanley volunteered for Happy Hearts School, Ash/Craft Industries and Special Olympics for over 45 years. He was co-contractor of the Ashtabula Special Olympics Park with his good friend Dick Flower. They built a ball field, equipment building, enclosed pavilion, and a track for Special Olympics. He also assisted Dick Flower with the swim team. He served on the Ash/Craft Board of Directors and was Committee Chairman for Happy Hearts School Boy Scout Troop 24. He was always ready to help a friend who needed help and always found time to call on friends who were ill.

Stanley enjoyed fishing trips to Mexico, Nova Scotia, Canada and Alaska. He also fished on Lake Erie for over 64 years. He enjoyed traveling, watching sports and working in the yard.

Stanley was a member of The First Presbyterian Church. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #943 and belonged to The ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) of Ashtabula County, and was one of the original members of The Special Olympics Booster Club.
