ASHTABULA —
Irving Abraham Goodman, age 90, of Westminster Drive, passed away on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at UH-Case Medical Center.
He was born April 9, 1922, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of Jacob and Anna (Smukler) Goodman and had been a longtime Ashtabula resident. A graduate of Union College in 1943, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Prior to his retirement in January of 1988, Mr. Goodman served as treasurer and chief financial officer for A. Louis Supply Co., and previously for Wheeler Manufacturing. He had also worked as a research chemist for NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) at the Lewis Research Center.
A longtime community servant, he was a past member of the Family Services Board, Kiwanis, United Way, Ashtabula Co. Choral Music Society, and the Good Life Singers and was honored to have been able to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. He served as past-president of Tifereth Israel Congregation, was a member and past-president of the Ashtabula County District Library Board and also served as a tax counselor for AARP.
His survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Harriet (Shapiro); three children, Deborah G. (David) Shifrin of Beachwood, Michael D. (Gail) Goodman of Silver Spring, Md. and Daniel M. (Jennifer Tobin) Goodman of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Joshua and Jonathan Goodman, Aaron Shifrin and Rees Goodman; a sister, Ruth Solomon of Albany, N.Y.; and a brother, David Goodman of Colonie, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Sol Goodman and Marilyn Etkin.
A Service will be held 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16th, at Tifereth Israel Congregation, 713 W. Prospect Circle, Ashtabula. Rabbi Stephen Weiss, of B’nai Jeshurun Congregation, will officiate. Those attending are asked to please park at Messiah Lutheran Church, 615 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Tifereth Israel Section.
Following the internment, the family will be receiving visitors until 6 p.m. at the home of Harriet Goodman, 1422 Westminster Drive in Ashtabula. No calling hours will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to Tifereth Israel Congregation or to The Gathering Place (a support community for families and individuals touched by cancer), 23300 Commerce Park, Cleveland, Ohio 44122.
