ASHTABULA — Earnest Leonard Currie, age 89, of W. 29th St., died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Earnest was the eldest son of the late Lonnie P. Currie and Beulah (Albright) Currie. He was born July 13, 1923, in Moundsville, W.Va. His family settled in Bellaire, Ohio, where he attended school and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1941.
After graduation, he joined the Civilian Conservation Core (CCC) as an Army engineer, and later served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II until his discharge in 1946. After spending several years as a coal miner in Pawhatten, Ohio, he moved to Ashtabula, Ohio, in the late 50s. There he secured employment at Elkem Metals where he worked until his retirement in 1985.
Earnest was a member of the Gordon A.M.E. Church and also attended Peoples Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing cards, pinochle, bowling, fishing and sports, especially the Cleveland teams.
He liked to cook and was well-known for his homemade spaghetti sauce. But his greatest passion was his family. He loved to attend his grandchildren’s activities, and baby-sit whenever he was given the chance to do so.
His survivors include five children, Michael, Ernie and Cheryl Currie, all of Ashtabula, Lester Currie of Baltimore, Md., and Linda (David) Moody of Mentor; three grandchildren, Kristopher, Tim and Aaron; and two brothers, Charles Currie of Fayetteville, N.C., and Everette Currie of Bellaire, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxcille (Harris) in 1985; one brother, Donald Currie; one sister, Thelma Currie in infancy; and his parents.
Calling Hours will be at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Noon, on Thursday, Sept. 20th, with a Service to follow at 12 p.m., Noon. The Rev. Jimmie D. Smith, Pastor of Lake Galilee Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, will officiate with the Rev. Thomas McCain, Associate Pastor at the Pentecostal Church of God, delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
