'Side Show' brings a circus to the theater

ASHTABULA - - Straw Hat Theatre will stage the musical drama "Side Show" to it's indoor stage Friday through Sunday and July 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, and 28.

All Straw Hat performances begin at 8:00 p.m.

Written by Bill Russell with music by Henry Krieger, the Broadway show was nominated for four Tony Awards in 1998.

Directed by Stephen Rhodes of Conneaut, "Side Show" is a musical about Daisy and Violet Hilton, two conjoined twins who are an odd but compelling footnote in American cultural history.

Adopted at birth by the midwife who delivered them, the twins were performing by the age of 3. In the 1930s, they

made a change from being a circus act to becoming famous vaudeville performers. But Violet wants to find a husband and settle down while Daisy seeks fame and "frenzied acclaim."

The Straw Hat show includes all the same beloved songs such as "I Will Never Leave You" and "Who Will Love Me As I Am?" that audiences of the Broadway production came to know and love.

Included in the "Side Show" cast will be Melissa Almassi, Doug Anderson, Christine Banks, Hannah Beaumont, Nick Boyd, Megan Case, Nick Cusano, Lee Emrich, Rose Emrich, Larry Gasch, Colleen Juhasz, Johnny Luoma, Zac Markley, Buddy Foster, Nick Meloro, Terry Connor, Robert Pierce, Fred Robsel, Sara Ruane and Martha Sorohan.

Straw Hat Theatre is located at the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St. Tickets can be purchased by calling the arts center at (440) 964-3396. Tickets can also be purchased at the door if seating remains available. Patron seating $12, adults $10, seniors $9 and students/children $8.
