Ashtabula Orchestra hosts concert

ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula Orchestra’s Christmas concert features singers from the Ashtabula County Choral Music Society, Lakeside High School Concert Choir and Lake County Messiah Chorus.

The event, slated for Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Lakeside High School Performing Arts Center, will be conducted by George Doviak and will include “A Christmas Festival,” “March of the Toys “ from “Babes in Toyland” and “Dance of the Sugar Plums” from “The Nutcracker;” “Carole of the Bells,” “Sleigh Ride” and excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah.”

The orchestra originated with Oliver Kaura in March 1982. He was cellist and former Harbor High School band director.

Clarinetist William Church served as first conductor, followed by Karl Meinhardt. Doviak has lead the orchestra since spring 2008.

By 1985, the all-volunteer group became the “orchestra in residence” at Kent State University — Ashtabula.
