ASHTABULA — Set in the 1920s at the death of vaudeville and birth of the burlesque stage, the story of "Gypsy" is one of family heritage, personal determination and quests for stardom.
G. B. Community Theatre at the Ashtabula Arts Center will play its two final performances today and Saturday at 8 p.m.
Based on a true story, Mama Rose, played by Linda Fundis of Austinburg, was the ultimate stage mother who lived through her daughters, Louise and June.
When June, played by Julia Hines and Caitlyn Dubeanski, leaves her family and their vaudeville act in pieces, Mama Rose turns to the long-ignored daughter Louise, played by Jordan Malin and Julia Mollick, to carry on her pursuit of fame. Louise finds unexpected success in the burlesque world and becomes the much-admired Gypsy Rose Lee.
Set to the favorite melodies of Jule Styne and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, “Gypsy,” written by Arthur Laurents, is a story that spans all the dynamics of the life, love, laughter and loss. It includes many familiar songs such as “Everything's Coming Up Roses,” “You Gotta Get a Gimmick,” “Some People,” and “Let me Entertain You.”
The G. B. Community Theatre production is directed by Joshua Twining of Ashtabula.
Show tickets are on sale for $12 patron seating, $10 adults, $9 seniors and $8 students and can be purchased by calling the arts center at 964-3396.

auditions set
Auditions for this summer's musical season at The Ashtabula Arts Center's Straw Hat Theatre will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon for students in grades 1 to 8 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. for grades 9 through adults.
Auditions will also be be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. for grades 9 through adults.
Auditions will be held for four musical productions on a first-come, first-served basis. Those wishing to audition should arrive prepared with a reading or prepared piece of the actor's choice. It should be no longer than one minute. The actor will also need to be prepared with a vocal selection no longer than 90 seconds. Bring sheet music.. Paricipants may be asked to read or sing something by the directors and may be asked to do a movement audition.
Auditions are being held for the following productions: “The Last Five Years” (the male lead of this two-character show has been pre-cast), directed by Brint Learned and Connor O'Brien which will play on June 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14; “Little Mary Sunshine,” directed by Steve Rhodes which will play on June 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, July 3, 4, 5; “Alice in Wonderland,” directed by Linda Fundis, which will play on July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26; and “Grease,” directed by Douglas Anderson, which will play on Aug. 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16.
