CHARDON —
Teens from Geauga high schools are working together on the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild’s production of “West Side Story,” opening tonight.
Students are coming from Chardon, Berkshire, Cardinal, Ravenna, St. Mary’s, St. Helen’s, St. Anelm’s and home school students.
D. Roger Dixon, new to the guild, will direct the classic adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo And Juliet,” with script by Arthur Laurents and music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
The story opens in an urban setting as two young idealistic lovers who find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the American Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks.
Tony and Maria struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice in this musical drama.
Maddy McClusky (Maria) from Chardon High School is one of many siblings in this production, sharing the stage with her twin, Connor McClusky, (Officer Krupke). Jonathan Porter (Riff), a junior at Cardinal, and his sister, Chloe Porter (Teresita), have been in numerous musicals together and on their own.
Most of the teens in this production are involved in the arts in a variety of ways. All perform at their own schools, as well as other community venues. Ryan Scott (Tony), a junior from Berkshire, plans to pursue acting and study to become a psychologist at college. Julia Mihalich (Rosalia) and Michael Gault (Bernardo) perform at Ravenna and Julia is involved at Kent State for post-secondary opera productions. Sarah Wyatt (Anita) and Joey Giel (Chino) are actively perusing professional acting work. Tia Workman, the highlighted ballerina, studies ballet and various dance forms. Isabella and Annamarie Mastrey are ballroom dancers.
The play runs through Feb. 5. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 8; Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. The theater located at 101 Water St.
