A Red Carpet Event

Lakeside Junior High holds annual celebrity-themed dinner dance

ASHTABULA – It’s official: The Lakeside Junior High Red Carpet Event has become an annual affair.

The dinner dance for seventh- and eighth-grade students was first held last year and became an instant hit. It returned by popular demand Friday night.

“It’s definitely become the talk of the school for the past month,” said Raena Sidbeck, vice president of the school’s Boosters, which sponsors the dance. Kathie Manning is president.

The premise is simple, creative and fun: Students are invited to come to the dance dressed as movie stars, rock divas, mega-million athletes and famous rockers. Even fictional and historical characters are invited. Tatiana Santiago came as Pocahontas and Taylor Paneto and Mike Andes rumbled into the even in a four-wheeler dressed like Wilma and Fred Flintstone.

Every student walked the red carpet for review by a panel of judges that included Ashtabula City Manager Tony Cantagallo. The judges awarded “mini Oscars” in five categories, including best look-alike and most original.

After walking the carpet, the celebrity re-enactors filled up on a catered meal, which was followed by two hours of dancing.

Sidbeck says parents of the seventh-grade students have already committed to holding another dance next year.

“It’s probably the most popular dance of the year,” Sidbeck said.
