Petra's John Schlitt, 'Mystery Night' coming to Koinonia

HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP - John Schlitt, lead singer of Petra, will present a solo concert at Camp Koinonia Oct. 28.

The 5 p.m. concert will be held in a tent at the camp. Following the concert, students in grades 7 to 12 will have the option of participating in the annual Mystery Night.

Cost of the concert is $15 per person. The concert is open to all ages.

Mystery Night costs an additional $15. Food will be sold at the concert and snacks are provided as part of the Mystery Night venue.

Schlitt was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He is the only artist to simultaneously have four albums in the Top 100 SoundScan Christian albums. Petra was the first rock group to win the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Group of the Year.

His Grammy awards include Best Rock Gospel Album in 2000, "Double Take," and in 1994,"Wake-Up Call."

In 1992, Petra won the Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album for "Unseen Power" and, in 1990, for "Beyond Belief."

Petra also has won a long list of Dove Awards for it's trend-setting music.

Schlitt, 56, has done two solo albums since 1995 and 16 albums with Petra.

He will greet fans following the concert and also speak at the closing campfire following Mystery Night.

The following morning, Oct. 29, Schlitt will speak and sing at the Crossroads Community Church, Route 528 and Middle Ridge, Madison. Services are 9 and 11:15 a.m.

The Mystery Night event has been named "Koinonia Idol." Early into the evening, a crime will be committed at the camp. It will be up to the teens to find out who did it and why.

Teens will be divided into teams of not more than 10 per team. They will travel between stations around the camp to gather clues. In the process, they'll also discover biblical truths.

"Koinonia Idol" was written by Tom Roth and a team of volunteers. Roth is also director of the program, the camp's 10th annual.

Schlitt will have a secret role in the Mystery Night performance.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Roth says. "It's kind of like a live game of Clue."

For more information, call 466-1278. Camp Koinonia, an American Baptist Church denomination camp, is located at 6810 Cork-Cold Springs Road, Geneva.

Tickets will be sold at the door or by reservation.
