ASHTABULA — For her 13th birthday, Gerriann Notter-Kiphart’s mother created individual doll cakes in which the dresses of the dolls were cake with flowing frosting, and she has been smitten ever since.
Notter-Kiphart, owner of the Cake and Candy Connection, is continuing her love of cake decoration at her new location at 1631 Columbus Ave.
“I learned from my mom, who did cakes for family. That’s how I started, in my teens,” she said. “This is what I love to do.”
Notter-Kiphart bought the Cake and Candy Connection eight years ago, and the store had been on Lake Avenue for 25 years.
“I made the move due to the economy,” she said. “I needed to downsize in order to keep going, which is what I wanted to do more than anything.”
The Cake and Candy Connection still carries most of the same products from the Lake Avenue location. The biggest change is there no longer will be wedding-related items for rent.
“My focus now is on cake decorating and candy-making supplies along with wedding and all-occasion cakes,” Notter-Kiphart said.
Customers also can special-order cookies for all occasions, along with pies and cheesecakes. Just in time for Easter, Notter-Kiphart is hand-making solid chocolate rabbits in four sizes and suckers made with pure Wilbur Cashmere milk chocolate. Also for Easter are traditional Italian ham pies, rice pies and sweet bread.
This wedding and graduation season cupcake trees, fondant-covered cakes and edible pictures are all the rage.
“The sky is the limit creatively with cakes nowadays,” she said.
A graduate of St. John High School, Notter-Kiphart remained in her hometown, where she keeps her baking creative and personal. She guarantees the freshest baked goods in town.
“Everything is made to order,” she said. “Nothing is frozen or made ahead; it must be ordered.”
The store is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
