The Pope is the leader of the largest practicing religious group in Ashtabula County. The budget cuts could mean cuts in the amount of federal dollars going into a number of programs in Ashtabula County, including schools, social service agencies and emergency services.
The biggest topic — at least measured in terms of letters to the editor — remains gun control. The majority of letters I receive each week deal with this subject. Most of the letters are against any additional gun control. Lately though letters are coming across my desk suggesting the need for gun control. Some of those letters will be in Saturday’s OPINE.
I have an admission to make: I have never fired a real gun in all my years. I have shot an air rifle. In my pre-teen days I had old western cap guns. Had a lot of fun with them. Loved the bang and smoke they made. Even hammered on some caps on the sidewalk.
Even though I have never fired a real gun, I still have respect for the Second Amendment that gives responsible people the right to own and use firearms. There are reasons our founding fathers made freedom of expression and the right to bear arms one and two on our Bill of Rights. Both are needed to ensure our sense of freedom. In both cases responsibility is a must.
Freedom of expression and freedom to bear arms does not mean freedom to create victims though.
