THE FIRST vessel built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works shipyard in Ashtabula was the Louis R. Davidson, a 524-foot steamship built for the American Steamship Co. of Buffalo. The vessel made its maiden voyage 100 years ago. Many of the vessels built at the Ashtabula yard outlived their birthplace, which closed in 1961.
